How to Properly Clean Your Tile Floor

Tile floors can be a great investment for any home if they are cared for and maintained properly. However, using the wrong combination of chemicals or not cleaning them as frequently as necessary can lead to shifting or lackluster tiles. With the help of our in-house interior designer, Brooke, here are some ways to properly clean a tile floor.

Mopping, Sweeping, and Vacuuming

Vacuuming and sweeping are the best ways to keep tile floors clean. Regular sweeping or vacuuming will keep particles, such as dust, from penetrating the small holes in the tile that can make the tiles lose their vibrancy.

Mopping with warm water and a mild detergent “as needed” will help go deeper into the tile to get at the stuff the vacuum missed as it passed over. When mopping a tile floor, do not use a sponge mop and do not be afraid to change the water in the mop bucket. Not taking these precautions will mean that you are simply spreading the dirt over a bigger area instead of removing it.

Hazy Tiles

A film over top of the tiles can have two different causes. First, it can be a sign that you did not mop correctly, by either using the wrong kind of mop or not changing the water frequently enough throughout the process. Second, it may be leftover soap residue also resulting from the last time you mopped.  Luckily, this is a problem that can easily be resolved with some all-purpose cleaner.

Grout

Grout is incredibly important to the maintenance of a tile floor because it is quite literally what holds it all together. Grout, however, can pose a problem because it is porous and has many small openings that dirt can get into and cause it to break down. Not to mention dirty looking grout will take away from an otherwise clean tile floor.

Cleaning the grout on your own can be time-consuming. It may entail spending hours on your hands and knees scrubbing between tiles with a small brush. Another problem when it comes to cleaning your grout are chemicals like bleach because it can “damage the grout.”

The same goes for other at home methods. Due to this possibility, it is recommended that you have your tile floor professionally cleaned a couple times a year so that the grout can be properly cleaned and sealed.
