As you're considering new flooring for your home you can also decide to reduce the impact that you're making on the environment. There are a number of trends in home flooring that can help you live a greener and more eco-friendly lifestyle. The keys to green living are this: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. And the current flooring trends take advantage of all three. You'll be able to select from carpeting, hardwoods, and other materials that are being produced to minimize the impact on the environment, make them easier to clean without harsh chemicals, and that won't release toxic chemicals into your home. Green Carpet Choices Don't assume that carpeting isn't a green choice. Many of the biggest carpeting manufacturers are getting serious about the environmental impact of their carpet production. They're not just focusing on the materials, but also how they manufacturer their carpets. As an example, take a look at Mohawk's GreenWorks. It's their overall approach to manufacturing and sustainability. In Mohawk's program they've saved several hundred million gallons of water through recycling, they've recycled millions of pounds of scrap wood, turned billons of plastic bottles into carpet fibers, and focused on renewable resources for their carpeting. Wood Floors from Renewable Sources There are two basic ways that you can reduce your environmental impact and still get beautiful wood floors. You can select recovered and recycled flooring or you can select flooring that comes from sustainable and renewable sources. Manufacturers like Anderson have taken the lead in producing beautiful, sustainable flooring products. Anderson was the first to become certified under the National Wood Flooring Associations' Responsible Procurement Program and has been certified both environmentally safe and sustainable by Greenguard and McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. Tile and Laminates You can also use tile, laminates, and other flooring options to reduce your environmental impact. Not only are these materials easier to clean in a green way, but they're being manufactured in an environmentally sensible fashion. One of the leaders in green flooring manufacturing is Daltile. The Daltile Greenworks program focuses on helping builders to achieve LEED certification and to take advantage of the latest green building approaches. Daltile also focuses on making their manufacturing process earth-friendly by recycling process water in manufacturing and reducing and recycling the materials used in their flooring products. One of the best ways to find out more is to visit your local flooring retailer and ask them for information on green and eco-friendly flooring. There you'll be able to touch, feel, and smell the products that these manufacturers are creating to help make your home more in line with your ecological goals.

Do you want to keep your carpets cleaner, make them last longer, and make your home a healthier place for you and your family? Here are five easy tips that can help you do just that. 5 Quick & Easy Carpet Cleaning Tips: I. Vacuum more often. In today's busy lifestyle most homeowners vacuum only infrequently. You'll extend the life of your carpets if you do a quick vacuuming of your most used and heavily trafficked areas more frequently. How frequent? Just vacuum a few minutes every other day and you'll gain years of life with your carpets. II. Consider treating your carpets to repel stains and dirt. Treating your carpets can make a BIG difference. There are many options, including products like Scotchgard and Teflon. Rather than let stains soak in and bind to your carpet fibers, these treatments can repel liquids and stains. They can make it easy to just blot up spills and make your carpets virtually stain proof. Talk with your local carpet retailer about what types of carpet treatments are best for your carpets. III. Spot clean immediately. When you see a spill or stain happen, follow these basic steps: Blot it up - don't spread it around by scrubbing, just blot it with a clean towel or paper towels. Use a spot cleaner - Keep a supply of carpet spot cleaner on hand and immediately treat the spot after you've blotted it. Follow the directions on the can or bottle. Stay off it - After you've blotted and spot cleaned, block off the area like a miniature crime scene. Let the area dry and keep feet off of it. After it's dried you can vacuum and see if you need any additional cleaning. IV. Use baking soda to refresh and clean your carpets twice a year. An inexpensive box of baking soda can make your carpets smell cleaner and help you to get up other dirt and grime from carpet surfaces. It's easy. Just sprinkle the fresh baking soda on your carpeting and use a dry mop to gently distribute the white powder over the surface. Don't grind it in - just distribute it! Then vacuum thoroughly. Your room will smell fresher and the tiny particles of the baking soda will help to loosen the dirt particles and let you vacuum them up. V. Replace your vacuum's bag and filter frequently. This is the simplest and most overlooked task you can do to make cleaning your carpets easier. Too many people wait until their carpet bags or canisters are completely full. This will reduce the effectiveness of your vacuum. It's easy to tell when you need to replace them: just feel the bag and when it's about one half full, replace it! You'll immediately notice how much more suction your vacuum is producing. The same works for bag-less vacuums. Empty them even more frequently. For the most effective vacuuming, empty those canisters each time before you vacuum. Follow these five tips and you'll get cleaner carpets and help make your house a healthier, more spot free home.
