Keeping Your Carpets Clean This Summer

The lawn is green, and the pool is open — summer is finally here, and with it comes the wet towels, the grass strains, and of course the occasional ketchup spill. Don’t sweat it though! Summertime, and the living is easy, right? We definitely think so. Just follow our simple tips, and your carpets will look great all summer long.

The first defense against dirty carpets is limiting how much gets into them in the first place. Try and keep outside shoes off of the carpets, and keep doormats at all entries. Frequent vacuuming is the best way to keep dirt from becoming embedded, which is why it’s crucial to have a vacuum that's easy to use. Consider keeping a cordless vacuum nearby to use in between deeper cleanings.

Spot-Cleaning Tips:

Start the cleaning process by carefully removing any excess spillage. Food residue should be carefully removed with a spoon before any blotting begins. If the spill is large, use a vacuum to remove most of the material before blotting.

Then, blot up spills by covering the area with a clean towel. Press down with the heel of your hand, and repeat using dry towels until all the liquid has been absorbed.

If residue remains, continue to clean by mixing a spot-cleaning solution. Dilute a few drops of clear hand-dishwashing soap in water. Blot the area with the solution, and then rinse by blotting with a clean wet towel. Repeat these two steps as needed. Be careful not to rub, or the carpet fibers may become matted.

If the stain simply won’t budge, don’t worry — that’s what the experts are for. Simply pour yourself a glass of ice-cold lemonade, and hire an IICRC-certified and CRI-approved carpet care professional. .
