Luxury Vinyl Flooring 101

Luxury vinyl is a durable, water-resistant flooring option with the beautiful look of hardwood, tile or stone. Also referred to as LVT (luxury vinyl tile) or LVP (luxury vinyl plank), vinyl flooring is made up of multiple layers that aid in its design, durability and ease of maintenance. And unlike some natural materials, vinyl is soft underfoot and warm to the touch.

Luxury vinyl is available in numerous patterns, colors and gloss levels, which means there’s a style perfect for any room. And because of its surface layer, water and spills won't affect this flooring making it the ideal solution for spaces such as basements, kitchens and bathrooms and one of the most popular flooring options available.

How is Luxury Vinyl Flooring Made?

Luxury vinyl flooring is made up of several distinct layers that combine to create a durable, beautiful, and waterproof flooring option. While each manufacturer has its own “special sauce” typical construction is comprised of these layers:

Backing Layer: This is a heavy-duty supportive base layer that adds sound insulation, absorbs subfloor imperfections, and prevents mold and mildew.

Core Layer: This vinyl PVC material is the main component of luxury vinyl and is 100% waterproof.

Print Layer: This is the decorative 3D image that provides the desired appearance. It is durable, and scratch and dent resistant.

Wear Layer: This is the top surface that provides extra durability, and stain and scratch resistance of vinyl flooring. The wear layer is usually a clear, urethane-based coating that keeps the original appearance of the floor and provides easy maintenance.

Luxury Vinyl Plank & Luxury Vinyl Tile

From color to species, Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) looks just like wood flooring. Many LVP products feature the look of scraping or embossing, which adds to the realism. But because the planks are made of vinyl, they’re easier to maintain—and a better option than wood in rooms with moisture, like kitchens and bathrooms.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) looks like stone or ceramic tile, complete with the vibrant natural colors and detailed surface textures that feel like the real thing. LVT can often be installed with grout for an even more authentic look. This can be a great flooring option if you love the look of natural tile but are concerned about damage due to dropped dishes or other objects.
